About The First World Series: Baseball's Grand Championship
On October 3, 1903, a crowd packed into the Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston to watch the Americans host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the very first game of the modern World Series, a best-of-nine showdown that would define baseball's championship tradition for generations. The air carried the smell of cut grass and tobacco smoke as fans in derbies and flat caps pressed against the ropes in the outfield, standing room only, to witness something entirely new. Pittsburgh would win that opening game, but Boston would claim the Series five games to three, and the annual autumn classic was born.
