On September 9, 1850, California was admitted to the Union as the 31st state, capping a breathless few years that had seen gold-seekers flood the Sierra foothills and tent cities bloom overnight along the bay. The new state stretched from desert valleys to towering redwood groves, from a Pacific coastline stitched with missions to snow-dusted mountain passes, a geography as dramatic as the dream that drew people there. California's motto, Eureka, Greek for "I have found it", captured that electric moment perfectly, and it still graces the state seal today.
