About The New York Times Prints Its First Edition

On September 18, 1851, the New York Daily Times rolled off the press for the very first time, a broadsheet born in an era when the smell of fresh ink and the rumble of iron presses announced the day's news to a hungry city. Founded by journalist Henry Jarvis Raymond, the paper sold for a penny a copy and quickly earned a reputation for sober, careful reporting in an age of raucous, partisan sheets. It was later renamed The New York Times, going on to become one of the most celebrated and widely read newspapers in American history.
