About Edison Patents the Phonograph

On August 31, 1897, Thomas Edison was granted U.S. Patent No. 589,168 for an improved phonograph, the device that first let ordinary people replay recorded sound in their own homes. Early machines coaxed music from a grooved wax cylinder with nothing more than a delicate steel needle, a spinning crank, and a flared horn to throw the sound across the room. That warm, slightly crackly voice drifting out of the brass bell was something no generation before had ever heard, music that could be captured, kept, and played again.

How to play
