About Thomas Edison's "Invention Factory" Opens in Menlo Park
On October 18, 1879, Thomas Edison and his team inside the cluttered laboratory at Menlo Park, New Jersey, watched a carbonized thread sealed inside a glass bulb hold its glow for more than thirteen hours, proof, at last, that practical electric light was real. The workshop hummed with copper wire, hand-pumped vacuum tubes, and the smell of scorched carbon as Edison's crew pushed the fragile filament further and further into the night. Within weeks he was demonstrating the system publicly, and within a few years gas lamps were giving way to electric light on streets across America.
