About Hawaii Becomes the 50th State

On August 21, 1959, Hawaii was formally admitted to the Union as the 50th state, the first and only island chain ever to join the United States. Spread across the Pacific on eight main islands shaped by fire and ocean, it brought with it a living culture of hula, lei-giving, and the spirit of aloha, a word that carries both greeting and a whole philosophy of warmth. Trade winds keep the air soft, hibiscus and plumeria bloom along every roadside, and the reefs that ring the islands shelter some of the most vivid marine life on Earth.
