On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people gathered at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and from the memorial's broad granite steps, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered the address the world would come to know as the "I Have a Dream" speech. His words, freedom, justice, hope, the dream of a nation living up to its own promise, rose over the Reflecting Pool and settled into history. It remains one of the most celebrated speeches ever given on American soil, its cadences as clear and resonant today as they were that August afternoon.
