About Ernest Rutherford: The Man Who Split the Atom Is Born

On August 30, 1871, Ernest Rutherford was born in Brightwater, New Zealand, the fourth of twelve children raised on a flax farm at the edge of the world. He would go on to reveal that the atom is mostly empty space surrounding a tiny, dense nucleus, a discovery so startling it remade the foundations of physics and chemistry alike. His Nobel Prize in Chemistry arrived in 1908, and the element rutherfordium was later named in his honor, a quiet reminder of how completely he changed the way we see matter itself.
