On August 19, 1871, Orville Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio, a quiet beginning for a man who would change the course of human history. He and his brother Wilbur ran a bicycle shop, tinkering with gears and lift and the stubborn puzzle of controlled flight, until the morning of December 17, 1903, when a fragile, fabric-covered biplane lifted off the sands at Kitty Hawk. That first powered, sustained flight lasted just twelve seconds, but it opened a sky that had never before belonged to humankind.
