About Gershwin's Porgy and Bess Opens on Broadway

On September 26, 1935, George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess opened at the Alvin Theater in New York City, bringing a wholly American opera to a Broadway stage for the first time. Set in the fictional Catfish Row of Charleston, South Carolina, the work wove the blues, jazz, and spirituals into a sweeping dramatic score, introducing the lullaby "Summertime" to the world. Gershwin called it a "folk opera," and its blend of operatic ambition and vernacular American music made it unlike anything audiences had heard before.
