On September 7, 1588, Queen Elizabeth I rode on horseback to the English army encamped at Tilbury, Essex, and delivered one of the most stirring speeches in history, declaring she had the heart and stomach of a king, and that no prince of Europe would dare invade England's shores. The Spanish Armada had already been scattered by storms and English fire ships, and the troops who heard her that day witnessed their queen armored, resolute, and utterly unafraid. Her words, carried by heralds and copied in letters across the realm, became a defining portrait of Elizabethan courage and the enduring glory of the Tudor crown.
