About Virgil's Aeneid: An Epic Poem Is Born
On October 15, 70 BC, the poet Virgil was born near Mantua, in northern Italy, and the ancient world gained the voice that would one day shape how Rome understood its own destiny. His Aeneid follows the Trojan hero Aeneas across storm-tossed seas, through the halls of Carthage, and into the heart of Italy, all driven by fate and the heavy call of duty. Written in the grand hexameter of Homer but charged with a distinctly Roman gravity, the Aeneid became one of the most revered literary works in all of Western tradition, copied, studied, and recited for more than two thousand years.
