About Dante's Divine Comedy: A Masterpiece of Poetry Is Born

On September 14, 1321, Dante Alighieri died in Ravenna, Italy, having spent his final years completing the grand vision he called his Commedia, a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise that would shape Western literature for seven centuries. Written in vivid vernacular Italian rather than Latin, the poem gave voice to eternal questions through the imagery of circles of souls, terraces of purgation, and a radiance so bright the pilgrim must shield his eyes. Dante finished the final canticle, Paradiso, shortly before his death, leaving readers a cosmos lit by stars, love, and the truth that lies beyond all shadow.
