About The Shamash Candle

Each evening of Hanukkah, as dusk softens the sky, the shamash, the helper candle set apart in its own raised notch, is lit first and used to kindle the others. Its flame travels from wick to wick, coaxing a glow that grows across eight nights. The menorah in the window becomes a small, steady beacon, its wax and oil and light carrying a story of perseverance that has been told for more than two thousand years.
