About A Grateful Nation
Veterans Day falls on November 11th because that's the exact hour, the eleventh, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, when the guns of World War I finally went quiet. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1938, and every November since, communities across the country have found their own ways to say what can be hard to put into words. A handshake in a church hall, a name read aloud at a monument, a folded flag passed across a kitchen table. The words on this page, things like VALOR, DUTY, and LOYALTY, aren't decorations. They're what the gratitude is actually made of.
