About The Armed Forces

The United States has five military branches, each with its own mission and its own culture. The Army is the oldest, tracing its founding to June 14, 1775, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence. The Coast Guard, youngest in the current lineup, quietly performs more peacetime rescues in a single year than most people realize, while the Marines, Air Force, Navy, and Army each carry their own distinct traditions, songs, and sense of belonging that stay with a veteran for life.
