About Travel & Places
Every spring, the cherry trees ringing the Tidal Basin erupt in pale pink clouds — a gift from Japan in 1912 that has drawn visitors ever since. The National Mall stretches nearly two miles from the Capitol's great dome to the Lincoln Memorial, lined with the Smithsonian's great museums and anchored by the soaring Washington Monument. At dusk, the Reflecting Pool holds a mirror to the sky, and the whole city feels like a quiet, enormous promise kept in stone.
