About The Matterhorn

Few silhouettes on earth are as instantly recognizable as the Matterhorn's four-sided pyramid rising 14,692 feet above sea level on the border of Switzerland and Italy. The village of Zermatt sits in the valley below, its timber chalets and smoke-threaded air unchanged in feel for generations, while cable cars glide silently toward the snowfields above. The first ascent of the Matterhorn came in July 1865, led by Edward Whymper by way of the Hörnli Ridge, a climb that sent shockwaves through the mountaineering world and made the peak legendary forever after.
