About Mount Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro rises from the Tanzanian plain without foothills to announce it, a lone volcanic massif topping out at 19,341 feet, its glaciers gleaming white against an equatorial sky. Three volcanic cones make up the mountain: Kibo, the highest, holds the snow-draped Uhuru Peak at its crown; Mawenzi, jagged and dramatic, stands to the east; and the broad Shira plateau anchors the west. Climbers pass through five climate zones on the ascent, rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit, while far below, elephants and cape buffalo move through the golden savanna of Amboseli.
