About The Year of Jubilee

Every fiftieth year, ancient Israel was commanded to sound the shofar on the Day of Atonement and proclaim liberty throughout the land. Debts were cancelled, servants were freed, and family fields that had passed to other hands were restored to their original owners, a sweeping reset woven into the very calendar of the nation. The Jubilee was less a legal code than a theology of grace: a living reminder that the land belonged to God, that no bondage was permanent, and that mercy had the final word.
