About Deborah

Beneath the shade of a palm tree in the hill country of Ephraim, Deborah held court, the only woman named as a judge in the Hebrew scriptures, settling disputes and hearing the voice of God. When the Israelite general Barak hesitated to march against the Canaanite commander Sisera, it was Deborah who called him forward and rode into battle at his side. Her victory song in Judges 5, often called the Song of Deborah, is among the oldest passages in the entire Bible, a fierce, lyrical hymn of praise sung after the stars themselves, it says, fought in Israel's favor.
