About The German Bakery

A German bakery opens early, and you can smell it from the corner: yeast and rye, with cinnamon somewhere behind them. Behind the glass sit crusty rolls, poppy seed twists, cakes with crumb toppings and the occasional tall torte. German bread culture was added to UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2014, and the country has well over a thousand registered bread varieties, so a good bakery treats a plain roll with the same care as a birthday cake.
