About The Blue-Plate Special
The blue-plate special has been a diner staple since at least the 1920s, when the divided compartments of a blue willow-patterned plate kept the entrée and sides neatly in their place. At its heart it was everyday abundance: a generous slice of meatloaf glistening with ketchup-laced gravy, a cloud of mashed potato, and something green alongside a warm roll. Walk into almost any corner diner and that spirit, a full, honest meal at a fair price, still fills the room like the smell of the kitchen itself.
