About Old Letters & Diaries
Somewhere in most families there's a trunk or a hope chest with a bundle of letters in it, tied with ribbon that's gone the color of weak tea. The ink has browned and the handwriting leans hard to one side. On the envelope, a 3-cent stamp, the first-class rate that held for years until 1958. A diary kept for years might say only that it rained and the corn came in late, and somehow that's the part you read twice.
