About The Family Bible

In many households the biggest book on the shelf wasn't read so much as consulted. Between the Old and New Testaments, or on the pages printed for the purpose, someone wrote in each birth and wedding, and later each funeral, usually in whatever ink was handy, and the handwriting changes as the generations do. Today those pages are often the only record of a great-grandmother's maiden name, which is why genealogists ask about them first.
