About Ellis Island
Between 1892 and 1954, about twelve million people came through the great hall on Ellis Island, most of them after ten days or more at sea. Names were checked against a ship's manifest, a doctor chalked a quick mark on a coat if something needed a second look, and then a ferry took you across to the city. Plenty of us have a grandmother's trunk or a creased ticket stub that started right there.
