About Caves & Caverns

Mammoth Cave in Kentucky has more than 400 miles of mapped passages, which makes it the longest known cave system on Earth. Like most caves of its size, it began as limestone eaten away from the inside by rainwater that picked up carbon dioxide from the soil and turned faintly acidic. A system that big took millions of years to dissolve. The decorations came afterward, once the rooms had drained and filled with air and each drip began leaving its bit of mineral behind.
