About Precious Metals
James Marshall spotted flakes of gold in the millrace at Sutter's Mill in January 1848, and within a year tens of thousands of people were headed west to California with a pan and a shovel. Gold never tarnishes, so a coin pulled from a shipwreck can come up looking freshly struck. Silver and copper are another story, and they darken in a drawer if nobody polishes them.
