About Generals of the Civil War

The war's generals were a small, tangled family. Many had been classmates at West Point, served together in Mexico, and knew each other's habits well enough to predict a flanking march. When Lee and Grant sat down in Wilmer McLean's parlor at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, they were two men who had once worn the same blue uniform.
