About Civil War Camp Life

Most of a soldier's war was spent waiting. A typical Union regiment of about a thousand men woke to the drummer and the bugle before dawn, and the army marched far less often than it sat in camp. Winter quarters, like the Army of the Potomac's at Brandy Station, Virginia, in 1863 and 1864, turned into small towns of log huts, with letters and fiddle tunes carrying the evenings.
