About The Civil War

Lee surrendered to Grant in the parlor of Wilmer McLean's house at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, and the story goes that McLean had moved there to get away from the war after the first major battle of it began on his farm at Manassas. That's the sort of detail these word searches are full of. Here you'll hunt for Little Round Top and Cemetery Ridge in the Gettysburg puzzle, find hardtack and fife and picket line out in the camp, and spot the Monitor and the Merrimack among the ironclads. Grant and Lee are here, naturally, but so are Chamberlain, Jackson, and a good many officers you may have to look twice for. The Underground Railroad puzzle has its own quiet weight, all lanterns and lantern-lit routes and conductors, and I'd start there if you can only pick one. Pick whichever one calls to you and take your time with it.
