About The Ironclads

On March 9, 1862, two odd-looking ships pounded each other for hours in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and neither one sank. Wooden navies had ruled the sea for centuries, and that morning's standoff made them obsolete. The sailors who served in these boats lived inside hot, cramped iron, with boilers below and cannon shot ringing off the plating.
