About The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was never a railroad and never entirely underground. It was a network of safe houses, barns, churches and quiet people who sheltered those escaping slavery, and it borrowed the language of trains because that was the new marvel of the day. Most journeys went on foot at night, following rivers and the North Star, with a kitchen table or a cellar waiting at the end of each stretch.
