About Grand Opera
La Scala in Milan opened in 1778, and the lights still go down there much as they do at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, which has stood since 1883 in one form or another. The stories are enormous and often fatal, but people keep coming back for the voices, one human throat filling a room with no microphone at all. Somebody in every family has a favorite aria they'll hum while doing dishes.
