About Find That Groove

Long before a song had a name, it had a feeling, a locked-in rhythmic pocket where the bass and drums moved as one, and everything else just rode. Motown's session musicians, famously known as the Funk Brothers, built that pocket night after night in a basement studio on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, laying down backbeats so irresistible that dancers couldn't stay still. That conversation between rhythm and feel, the snap of a snare, the lick of a guitar, the steady vamp of a chord, is the invisible architecture behind every great soul record.
