About The 45 on the Radio

Before streaming and before playlists, the radio was the gatekeeper of soul. A deejay with the right groove and a stack of 45s could lift an entire neighborhood, cueing up a dedication, reading a request card aloud, letting the needle drop on something that shook the room. Stations like WDIA in Memphis and WVON in Chicago were more than broadcasters; they were community heartbeats, spinning Motown, Stax, and Atlantic into living rooms and car radios across the country.
