About Europe's 1999 Solar Eclipse
On August 11, 1999, the Moon slid between Earth and the Sun in one of the most-watched total solar eclipses of the twentieth century, drawing its shadow in a narrow band from the tip of Cornwall eastward across France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Romania to the Black Sea. For a few breathless minutes, day turned to dusk, temperatures dropped, and birds fell silent beneath the racing umbra. It was the last total solar eclipse visible from densely populated Western Europe in the twentieth century, and millions stepped outside to tip their heads skyward.
