About The Sistine Chapel Ceiling Unveiled
On November 1, 1512, All Saints' Day, the scaffolding came down inside the Sistine Chapel, and the world looked up. Michelangelo had spent roughly four years lying on his back high above the floor, working wet plaster into scenes of breathtaking color and light: the Creation, the Flood, the Prophets, the Sibyls. The ceiling he left behind, nearly 500 square meters of fresco, remains among the most awe-inspiring works of art ever made by a single human hand.
