About King Tut's Tomb Is Opened
On November 4, 1922, a young water boy on Howard Carter's team cleared sand from a step cut into the rock floor of Egypt's Valley of the Kings, and the crew kept digging until sixteen descending steps revealed a sealed doorway that had not been opened in more than three thousand years. Beyond it lay the nearly intact burial chambers of the boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun: gilded thrones, alabaster canopic jars, painted scrolls, and a solid-gold innermost coffin that astonished the world. The discovery transformed our understanding of ancient Egypt's New Kingdom and set off a wave of fascination with pharaohs, hieroglyphs, and the rituals that were meant to carry a king safely into the afterlife.
