About Neptune Is Discovered

On September 23, 1846, astronomer Johann Galle trained his telescope on a precise point in the sky, not because he had spotted anything strange, but because mathematics said something had to be there. Two theorists, Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams, had each independently calculated that an unseen world must be tugging on Uranus from beyond. Galle looked, and there it was: a pale blue disk, steady and real, the first planet in history found by pencil and paper before any eye had ever glimpsed it. Neptune now holds the record as the most distant planet in our solar system, a cold giant wrapped in methane clouds and whipped by the fastest winds ever measured on any planet.
