About The Cornerstone of the White House

On October 13, 1792, the cornerstone of the President's House was laid in Washington, D.C. setting in motion the construction of what would become the world's most recognized residence. Designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, the building drew inspiration from Neoclassical ideals, graceful columns, a sweeping portico, and Aquia Creek sandstone walls later painted white, a practice that over time gave the house its enduring name. From its federal grounds to its formal garden, every detail was meant to speak of a young nation's confidence and permanence.
