On September 15, 1830, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened its regular passenger service, the world's first intercity steam railway. Crowds gathered at both termini as the gleaming locomotives rolled out under their own power, pulling carriages full of paying travelers across 35 miles of track laid through fields, cuttings, and over the boggy Chat Moss. The day marked a turning point: the age of steam had truly begun, and the way people moved across the land would never be the same again.
