About The New York Public Library Opens Its Doors
On May 23, 1911, President William Howard Taft dedicated the main branch of the New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, and the doors opened to the public that same day. The cornerstone of the Beaux-Arts building, faced in Vermont marble, had been laid on July 26, 1902, and the finished structure immediately drew crowds eager to browse its grand reading rooms and towering stacks. Two stone lions, nicknamed Patience and Fortitude, flanked the broad front steps and became icons of the city almost overnight.
