About The Smithsonian Opens Its Doors
On August 10, 1846, President James K. Polk signed the act of Congress that officially established the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. fulfilling the bequest of British scientist James Smithson, who left his entire estate to the United States to create an establishment "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge." Today the Smithsonian is home to nineteen museums, twenty-one libraries, and research centers spanning art, history, and natural science, all free and open to every visitor. Its iconic red-brick Castle on the National Mall remains the symbol of that original promise: curiosity belongs to everyone.
