About Auguste Lumière: A Pioneer of Cinema Is Born
On October 19, 1862, Auguste Lumière was born in Besançon, France, a man whose name would become inseparable from the birth of moving pictures. Together with his brother Louis, he co-invented the Cinématographe, a compact device that could capture, print, and project motion on film, astonishing its first paying audience in Paris in 1895. The flicker of light through a spinning shutter, the reel turning steadily through the gate, the image blooming onto a white screen, Auguste and Louis gave the world something it had never seen before and never forgot.
