About Upton Sinclair: The Muckraker Who Changed What We Eat

On September 20, 1878, Upton Sinclair came into the world in Baltimore, Maryland, and the world would never quite look at a meatpacking plant the same way again. His 1906 novel The Jungle plunged readers into the stench and shadow of Chicago's stockyards, following immigrant workers through conditions that shocked the American conscience. The public outcry that followed helped push Congress to pass landmark food safety laws that same year, proving that a single determined writer, armed with the truth, could move mountains.
