About The Mexican Posada

Each December, for nine nights running up to Christmas Eve, Mexican families and neighbors re-enact the journey of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter in Bethlehem. Candle-carrying pilgrims process through the streets or from room to room, singing the traditional call-and-response at a closed door until it swings open in welcome. The celebration that follows fills the air with the scent of ponche, a warm spiced fruit punch, and the crack of a papier-mâché piñata shaped like a seven-pointed star.
