About The Scandinavian Tomte

Long before department-store Santas, the farms of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark were quietly watched over by the tomte, a small, bearded guardian who lived beneath the floorboards or out in the barn. On Christmas Eve, a family would leave a bowl of porridge, rich with butter, on the doorstep or by the hearth as a thank-you for a year of good fortune. Miss a year, and the little fellow might just tip the milk pail and let the frost in.
