About Lake Tahoe

Straddling the California–Nevada border at nearly 6,230 feet above sea level, Lake Tahoe holds so much water that it could cover the entire state of California to a depth of about 14 inches. Its famous clarity, you can sometimes see objects more than 70 feet below the surface, comes from the surrounding granite basin, which filters runoff before it ever reaches the lake. In summer, white sails catch the afternoon breeze against a backdrop of lodgepole pine and snowcapped peaks; in winter, the same peaks turn the shoreline into one of the most celebrated ski destinations in North America.
