About Creepy Crawlies
Millipedes were among the first animals to leave the sea for dry land, more than 400 million years ago, which makes them older than flowers. Under a flat garden stone they're mostly working for the soil: worms and millipedes pull leaf litter underground, slugs and snails clear away rot, and a pale grub chewing roots is a young beetle on its way to something else. Not everything down there is an insect, either. The pillbug is a crustacean, and springtails are usually classed apart from true insects. Robins and hedgehogs get a good share of their meals from the same patch of dirt.
How to play
